Open source isn’t just a preference anymore; it’s the default foundation for modern application stacks. Enterprises are standardizing on technologies like Apache Cassandra, Apache Kafka, PostgreSQL, and OpenSearch to power business-critical applications, real-time pipelines, and customer-facing platforms.
But adoption has outpaced readiness.
In a recent AppDevANGLE conversation, I spoke with Ben Slater, VP and GM of Instacluster at NetApp, about the growing gap between open source infrastructure complexity and the operational maturity required to run it reliably in production.
The data behind this shift is hard to ignore. Our research shows 61% of enterprise environments run hybrid deployments, and 32% take hours to become aware of production problems. Meanwhile, engineering teams are increasingly expected to operate distributed systems with 24/7 uptime requirements, often without the specialized expertise those systems demand.
This isn’t a debate about whether open source is “enterprise-ready.” It’s about whether enterprise teams are set up to operate it responsibly at scale.
Open Source Adoption Is Rising Faster Than Expertise
One of the biggest misconceptions about open source is that the software itself is the hard part. The harder part is what happens after the download: patching, upgrades, incident response, performance tuning, security exposure, and reliability engineering.
Slater framed it plainly: if you download an open source project and run it yourself, you are also accepting full responsibility for fixing it when things go wrong.
“There’s no one there with an obligation to help you,” Slater explained. “You can log a bug with the project or post on a mailing list, but they’re not going to be on a critical response SLA.”
Distributed systems don’t fail politely. They fail in ways that demand deep expertise, not just in the operational patterns, but in how the internals behave under stress.
That’s why the expertise gap is becoming structural. Many teams can adopt these tools, but far fewer can staff and sustain the specialists required to operate them across environments and over time.
Multi-Technology Stacks Create Vendor Sprawl and Operational Drag
Open source adoption rarely happens in isolation. Cassandra might handle a globally distributed database need. Kafka may drive event streaming. Postgres supports relational workloads. OpenSearch powers search and analytics. Cadence supports workflow orchestration.
Each solves a different part of the application platform problem, but they also introduce fragmentation:
- different support models
- different management tooling
- different incident response processes
- different vendor and contract relationships
- different automation interfaces
As Slater described, a multi-technology platform changes the operational equation by standardizing how teams deploy, manage, and support these systems.
“It starts right back in the buying process,” he said. “You’re only negotiating one contract… Then once you get into actually operating, you have a consistent user interface… consistent Terraform provider… and a consistent way of working with your vendor.”
For platform engineering teams, this matters because operational consistency is a hidden accelerator. It reduces the friction that slows teams down as stacks grow more specialized.
True Open Source Isn’t Just About Cost; It’s About Strategic Flexibility
In enterprise conversations, “open source” often gets reduced to licensing savings. But in practice, the larger benefit is avoiding strategic dependence on proprietary forks, extensions, or gated distributions.
Slater made the case that open source has grown over the last decade because applications are now inseparable from the business itself. If your application platform becomes locked into a proprietary interpretation of open source, you’ve effectively outsourced strategic control.
“Actually, the bigger picture is strategic flexibility,” Slater said. “If you have adopted real, true open source… you’re not beholden to anybody else.”
This distinction becomes more important as projects mature, vendors consolidate, and ecosystems evolve. Teams want the option to move, refactor, or self-support when the market shifts even if they never plan to exercise that option.
Portability Is the New Negotiating Power in Hybrid Cloud
Hybrid isn’t going away. In fact, hybrid is becoming the operating model for modern application platforms, especially as organizations balance performance, compliance, customer proximity, and cloud economics.
Our research shows 20% of organizations say application portability is critical, and 67% say it’s very important. That maps closely to what Slater sees: most workloads aren’t truly “multi-cloud” at runtime, but enterprises want the ability to place workloads where they need to be, and to move them if conditions change.
He outlined three common drivers:
- Meet end customers where they are (deploy the application stack across clouds/regions)
- Maintain strategic leverage during hyperscaler negotiations
- Keep repatriation credible as costs and requirements shift
“You want to be able to say… we could move this thing next month,” Slater said. “That’s a credible bargaining chip.”
This is where open source and portability intersect. True open source lowers friction to relocate workloads, but only if the operations model supports consistent management across environments.
Reliability Is the Real Unlock for Open Source in Business-Critical Systems
Speed without reliability is just risk at scale.
The operational visibility gap shows up clearly in our research: 32% of enterprises take hours to become aware of production problems, while only 17% achieve near real-time visibility. That lag becomes costly when open source systems are supporting always-on applications.
What enterprises increasingly look for are production-grade operational capabilities around open source systems:
- 24/7/365 monitoring and proactive alerting
- defined incident response SLAs
- security controls and compliance support
- CVE exposure management
- performance optimization and operational playbooks
Slater described the core challenge as a timeline mismatch: teams can build and ship a new system quickly, but it takes far longer to operationalize it to the point where it meets real-world reliability expectations.
“Getting to that first release is one milestone,” he said. “But getting to the point where you actually have a reliable system… is a lot longer.”
This is the operational reality behind modern infrastructure stacks: the engineering bottleneck isn’t adoption. It’s operating maturity.
Why Developers Should Pay Attention
This conversation isn’t just relevant to operations teams. It’s relevant to developers because reliability, portability, and support models increasingly shape application architecture decisions.
What’s changing across the market:
- Open source is becoming the default for specialized infrastructure layers
- Skill gaps are becoming the limiting factor, not software availability
- Hybrid environments raise the stakes for portability and consistency
- Managed operations increasingly determine whether systems can scale safely
If your applications depend on distributed databases, streaming platforms, or search infrastructure, the question to ask isn’t “Is this open source?” It’s “Can we run this in production for years without becoming the bottleneck?”

As open source infrastructure becomes more specialized, and as hybrid becomes more common, enterprise teams will need a clearer operational strategy for how they run these platforms. That strategy will likely include a mix of internal expertise, automation, and operational partners.
