Aina, a San Francisco and Bangalore-based consumer hardware startup, has raised a $5.5M seed round to build what it describes as a general-purpose AI interface designed to replace touchscreens and keyboards as the dominant human-computer interaction paradigm. The round was led by Redstart Labs (Infoedge) and 360 ONE Asset, with participation from MIXI Global Investments, Antler, Blume Founders Fund, and a roster of notable angels. The company, which operated as “Project Mirage” before launching publicly, has already shipped a context-aware three-key Mac keypad called Dune to early adopters and is now opening a waitlist for a stealth-built flagship interface.

The interface gap is real, and it’s becoming a productivity problem
Aina’s core argument deserves to be taken seriously: software capability and hardware interfaces have drifted apart, and that gap is widening as AI matures. The company frames this well. Keyboards were last meaningfully redesigned in the 1980s. Smartphone interaction patterns were set in 2007. Meanwhile, AI systems can now generate content, book services, and execute multi-step workflows autonomously. The friction isn’t in the model. It’s in the moment between the model’s readiness and the human’s ability to respond.
This is a genuine design problem, not a marketing one. When every agentic workflow still bottlenecks on a human typing confirmation into a chat window, opening an app, or navigating through a menu stack, the efficiency gains from the AI layer are partially absorbed by the interface layer. The cognitive load argument Shankar makes in the press release is grounded in real ergonomic and UX research: decision fatigue compounds across a workday, and unnecessary input steps aren’t neutral, they cost time and attention.
Dune as a thesis validator, not just a product
The Dune keypad is worth examining as a strategic artifact. Three keys, context-aware, automatically adapting to whichever application is in the foreground. It’s deliberately minimal. The design bet is that reducing input surface area, rather than expanding it, is the right direction when AI handles interpretation and execution. That’s a meaningful inversion of how consumer hardware has evolved for the past two decades, where the answer to “how do we give users more control?” was always more buttons, more pixels, more options.
Shipping hundreds of units to power users and iterating on real workflows before raising a large round is a disciplined approach. The company is using Dune as a feedback instrument, not just a revenue line. That said, the gap between a three-key Mac accessory and a “general-purpose interface for the age of AI” is substantial. The stealth flagship product is where the real bet lives, and investors are funding a thesis, not a proven form factor.
What the enterprise angle looks like
Aina is positioning primarily as a consumer hardware company, but the dynamics it’s addressing have clear enterprise implications. ECI Research’s 2026 Application Development survey found that 65.2% of respondents selected “0–20” when asked what percentage of engineering time is spent on net-new innovation, meaning the overwhelming majority of engineering cycles are consumed by maintenance, coordination, and process overhead rather than building. Interfaces that reduce friction in repetitive confirmation and approval workflows could shift that ratio, even modestly, in a meaningful direction for large teams.
The agentic AI model that Aina is designing around, where AI proposes and humans approve, is also the model that enterprise software vendors are converging on. Salesforce, ServiceNow, and Microsoft are all building agent-first workflows where human oversight is a required checkpoint, not an optional one. If that checkpoint requires navigating a screen rather than pressing a physical key, the interface gap Aina is describing becomes an enterprise workflow problem, not just a consumer annoyance. ECI Research’s 2026 Application Development survey also found that 53.5% of respondents selected “AI-enabled development tools” as a top investment priority for the next 12 months, indicating that organizations are actively spending toward exactly the kind of AI-human integration layer Aina is attempting to address in hardware.
Looking Ahead
Aina’s near-term trajectory will hinge almost entirely on what the stealth flagship interface actually is. A seed round at $5.5M buys time to bring one product to market and establish a distribution footprint, but consumer hardware is expensive to scale. The waitlist strategy is sensible: it builds demand signal before committing to manufacturing volume. The investor syndicate, which includes Kunal Shah and the Razorpay founders alongside institutional leads, suggests confidence in the team’s ability to execute in both the San Francisco and Bangalore markets simultaneously, which is important given that manufacturing and design talent are distributed across both cities.
The broader category question is whether dedicated AI interface hardware can establish a durable market before software and existing device manufacturers close the gap. Apple, Google, and Samsung all have strong incentives to solve the same interface friction problem through OS-level changes and on-device AI. Aina’s advantage, if it has one, is speed and design focus. Startups have historically won in hardware by moving faster in a niche before platforms notice, and the HCI-for-AI niche is genuinely underserved right now. Watch for the flagship product reveal and any early enterprise channel partnerships as the clearest signals of whether Aina’s thesis translates beyond the power-user segment.
