BCNEXXT, a Netherlands-based playout technology vendor, used IBC2026 as the stage to announce a significant update to Vipe, its cloud-native playout platform. The new capabilities span three areas: expanded format support including Hybrid Log-Gamma HDR and Dolby Atmos (positioning Vipe as one of the first professional playout solutions licensed for Dolby Atmos), enhanced regional opt-out management with a new two-dimensional operator interface, and dynamic CPU/GPU optimization that scales compute resources against actual workload requirements. The company also announced support for the BBC’s Time Addressable Media Store (TAMS), an open-source initiative that enables time-position-based media access on object storage.

Playout Is Not a Solved Problem
There’s a persistent assumption in parts of the broadcast technology market that playout is mature, commoditized infrastructure. BCNEXXT’s IBC2026 announcement pushes back on that assumption with some force. The simultaneous demands of HDR, immersive audio, regional variants, and cloud-native efficiency are not incremental additions to an existing architecture. They represent a genuine engineering challenge, and the vendors navigating it well are those who built for flexibility from the start rather than retrofitting legacy playout stacks.
Vipe’s architecture is grounded in that principle. The simultaneous production and distribution of SDR and HDR versions from a single playout environment, combined with Dolby Atmos support alongside conventional broadcast audio, aims to address a real operational pain point: format proliferation without operational fragmentation. Broadcasters and streaming services are increasingly being asked to serve audiences across a wide range of devices and display capabilities, and doing so through separate processing silos is neither economical nor operationally sustainable.
The Compute Efficiency Argument Is the One to Watch
The most technically consequential announcement here is the dynamic CPU/GPU optimization. The traditional playout model provisions compute for peak load, meaning resources are allocated for the most demanding processing scenario even when the actual workload doesn’t require it. That’s wasteful in on-premises deployments and actively expensive in cloud environments where compute is billed by consumption. Vipe’s approach, automatically scaling both CPU and GPU based on real-time content analysis, directly attacks that inefficiency.
This matters to ITDMs because cloud playout economics are notoriously difficult to predict. Consumption-based billing for cloud infrastructure has been a persistent challenge in broadcast technology procurement, and the inability to confidently model costs is a real barrier to cloud migration for linear playout workflows. A platform that intelligently right-sizes compute allocation shifts that equation. Combined with TAMS-enabled object storage, which eliminates the need for high-performance (and high-cost) file systems, Vipe is making a coherent architectural argument for total cost of ownership reduction, not just feature parity with traditional playout.
Regional Opt-Outs and TAMS Signal Workflow Convergence
The regional opt-out enhancements and TAMS support point in the same strategic direction: collapsing the operational distance between linear broadcast, streaming, live, and VOD workflows. TAMS is particularly interesting because it decouples media access from file system conventions entirely, allowing content to be accessed by time position as soon as it’s written. That’s not just an efficiency feature; it changes what’s architecturally possible for live and near-live workflows at scale.
BCNEXXT’s “record once and use many times” framing is the right way to think about this. A single TAMS store supporting linear, OTT, social, and VOD distribution from one ingest event could reduce both infrastructure duplication and the operational coordination overhead that comes with managing separate content pipelines. For developers building against Vipe’s APIs, TAMS support also opens cleaner integration patterns with object storage tiers, removing a layer of abstraction that has historically complicated cloud-native playout architectures.
Looking Ahead
BCNEXXT enters the back half of 2026 in a strong competitive position. The combination of Dolby Atmos licensing, HLG HDR support, intelligent compute scaling, and TAMS integration gives Vipe a credible answer to nearly every format and efficiency question a broadcaster or streaming operator is likely to raise in an RFP conversation. The more important question for the next 12 to 18 months is whether BCNEXXT can translate that technical depth into commercial velocity, particularly with broadcasters in the UK and Europe who are actively evaluating cloud-native playout as part of broader infrastructure consolidation programs.
The TAMS angle deserves particular attention from the analyst community. As BBC R&D’s open-source initiative gains adoption, it has the potential to become a genuine interoperability layer across the broadcast technology ecosystem. Vendors who support it early, and who build workflow integrations around its time-addressable model, will have a structural advantage as the standard matures. BCNEXXT is betting that Vipe’s architecture is well positioned to benefit from that shift. Based on what’s been announced at IBC2026, that’s a reasonable bet.
